PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Cornell pitchers surrendered just five earned runs in Sunday's doubleheader, but Penn made its hits count to claim 3-1 and 5-3 victories at Penn Park to complete a four-game sweep of the Big Red. Penn moved to 21-19 (7-9 Ivy), while Cornell fell to 8-28 (3-13 Ivy).
Game 1
Cornell clawed back to tie the game at 1-1 in the sixth, but Penn rallied in its last at bat for a 3-1 win in what turned into a pitcher's duel. For the second straight day, it was the Quakers' Alexis Sargent who got the best of the Big Red.
Sargent allowed just four hits and one run while striking out eight in the complete game win, ruining a Cornell rally in the sixth that culminated in a two-out RBI single by
Leanne Iannucci to knot a game that Penn had led since the first inning. Jurie Joyner's two-run homer in the bottom half of the sixth after Sargent walked gave the home team the win.
Madeline Avery was 2-for-2 with a double and the lone run scored for the Big Red and Iannucci also had two hits.
Meg Parker did enough to win in the circle, taking the hard-luck loss after scattering eight hits and three runs over six innings.
Game 2
Cornell rallied for two runs in the seventh, but left the tying run on base in a 5-3 loss in the nightcap. The Big Red out-hit Penn 9-6 in the contest.
An RBI single by
Rebecca Kubena plated the game's first run and it stayed that way until the fourth, when Penn tied it up at 1-1. The Quakers took the lead thanks to an error in the fifth and tacked on three insurance runs to go up 5-1 heading into the seventh. The Big Red scored on a sacrifice fly by Kubena and a run-scoring single by
Megan Murray, but Cornell left runners at the corner as Penn completed the sweep of the four-game series.
Jessica Bigbie was 3-for-4 and scored two runs, while Kubena went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI.
Maddie Orcutt went the distance in the circle for the visitors, allowing just two earned runs and striking out four in six innings.
Cornell travels to Colgate for a single game on Tuesday, April 26 at 3:30 p.m. in Hamilton, N.Y.
