DeLoach's Early Strike Helps Women's Soccer Open With Win

Box Score (PDF)

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. — Junior forward Paige DeLoach scored in the fifth minute, and senior goalkeeper Kelsey Tierney made four saves to power the women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Siena in the squad's season debut on Sunday at Siena Field.

Freshman Juliana Comer earned an assist in her collegiate debut, as her ball into box found DeLoach before she turned and steered a shot inside the left post to give the Big Red an early lead. DeLoach picks up where she left off last season, when she was tied for the team lead with four goals.

The victory pushes the Big Red's unbeaten streak in non-league play to 12 games (9-0-3), dating back to a loss at St. Bonaventure on Oct. 13, 2014. Cornell has 11 shutouts over that span in games outside of the Ivy League. The Big Red also ended the Saints' regular-season unbeaten streak at seven games after Siena (1-1-2) went on a late-season surge last year to win the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference title and earn a berth into the NCAA tournament.

Unlike last year's opener, in which Cornell and Siena played to a scoreless draw despite the Big Red's territorial advantage and 22-3 lead in shots, Sunday's game saw more of a threat on Cornell's goal. Tierney's shutout is the 19th of her collegiate career, keeping her in third place on the program's all-time list behind just Melissa Gambrell (22) and Sue DeLong (20). Siena held the lead in shots Sunday, 13-8, with eight of their nine corner kicks coming in the second half.

Cornell returns to action next weekend with a road game Friday at Loyola before returning to Ithaca for its home opener at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 4 against Syracuse at Berman Field.
