VESTAL, N.Y. – Thanks to some timely saves from freshman goalkeeper
Ryan Shellow and a first career goal from freshman
George Pedlow, the men's soccer team tied the Binghamton Bearcats, 1-1, in overtime on Wednesday night at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
Cornell's loan goal came from the head of Pedlow in the 50th minute off of a corner that was earned by freshman
Brady Dickens.
Dickens picked up a loose ball 30 yards out and carried it into the box and around a drawn out keeper but the shot was deflected out for a corner. On the ensuing corner,
Madison Heck sent the ball to the near post and Pedlow was able to out-jump the defenders and head the ball into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
Binghamton (3-1-3) answered back just seven minutes later when Harrison Weilbacher sent a ball across the top of the box to an open Ben Ovetsky who slotted the ball past a charging Shellow to tie the game.
Throughout the first half, most of the play remained in the midfield, but Cornell (0-3-2) was able to generate some chances – including the goal – with most coming in the first or last 10 minutes of each half.
Seven of the Big Red's eight shots in regulation came in either the first or last 10 minutes of a half. Cornell and Binghamton would both finish the 110 minutes of play with 10 shots, but five of Cornell's went on goal to Binghamton's three.
Just past the 10 minute mark of the first half, Pedlow collected an errant Binghamton pass at the top of the box and fired a ball to the lower left corner, but Alejandro Cubillo made the diving save to keep the game scoreless. Just 90 seconds later, junior
Eric Nuss made an overlapping run from his left back spot and was fed a ball that he fired on goal from 25 yards out only to have it deflected up and over the goal.
Jack Ferguson ran onto a bouncing ball inside the box with under 10 minutes to go in the first half but fired it wide of the net.
Riley Adams and Pedlow each recorded shots on goal that Cubillo had to work to save as time wound down.
Shellow and the backline worked well together in their first extended action of the season and did well to quell the Bearcats offense
In his first career start, Shellow made timely, veteran saves in the second half and overtime periods to keep the game deadlocked.
Twice in the final 10 minutes of play, Shellow kept the game tied when charged off his line to collect a ball before Binghamton could poke it home. The keeper also made a crucial save by punching away a corner with just four seconds left on the clock in regulation. Shellow made another charging run off of his line with under two minutes to go in overtime to again snuff out Binghamton scoring chance.
The backline cleared a free kick in the 14th minute and then
Spencer Kopko and
Duff Bedrosian worked to shutdown a Binghamton threat in the 23rd minute, with Bedrosian bodying the Bearcat off the ball and Kopko coming in for the ball clearance. It would be Kopko who would have another key clearance on a similar play in the 77
th minute to, once again, keep the score tied.
Binghamton nearly found the winning goal in the second overtime but the ball ricocheted off of the upper-right goal post.
The team finally returns to Berman Field this weekend to defend their 2015 CU Inaria Cup title with two games. First up is Saint Francis (Pa) on Friday at 7 p.m. before taking on New Hampshire on Sunday at 1 p.m.
