ITHACA, N.Y. — The men's squash team split its Ivy League-opening matches at Belkin International Squash Courts this weekend, suffering an 8-1 loss to Yale on Saturday before rebounding with a victory over Brown the following day.
Cornell (4-1, 1-1 Ivy League), which entered the weekend ranked 10th in the country by the College Squash Association, got two victories from sophomore
Andy Muran at the No. 3 position. He accounted for the Big Red's lone point against second-ranked and defending Potter Cup champion Yale by rallying to win in four sets against Kah Wah Cheong, who finished last year ranked 17th in the country individually.
Muran then breezed to a three-set sweep to kick off Sunday's match, then junior
Andrew Stone survived a five-set match at the No. 9 position to give the Big Red an early 2-1 lead against 17th-ranked Brown. Sophomore
Perry Hanson won in three sets at No. 2, then the Big Red clinched the match with a pair of five-set victories from senior
Augie Jones (No. 5) and sophomore
Alex Jung (No. 8). Cornell went on to sweep the final rotation, running its win streak against Brown to 17 consecutive matches.
Cornell returns to action with a pair of road matches on Wednesday. The Big Red takes on Hobart at noon in Geneva, then treks west to Rochester for a 6 p.m. match against the third-ranked Yellowjackets.
