Upset Loss To GW At Forefront of Men's Squash's Weekend

ITHACA, N.Y. — The men's squash team was defeated in three matches this weekend at Belkin International Squash Courts. The Big Red was dealt a 7-2 loss to Drexel on Saturday, then came up short in a 5-4 nailbiter against George Washington on Sunday morning before a 9-0 loss at the hands of national No. 1 Trinity later in the day.

Cornell (5-5), which entered the weekend 10th in College Squash Association national rankings, got two victories from sophomore Alex Jung. Competing from the No. 7 position against the Dragons, he survived a back-and-forth match before emerging victorious in the fifth set, 13-11.

Jung's win at No. 7 against 12th-ranked George Washington was too little, too late in the Big Red's final-rotation comeback bid. He swept his match and senior Harry Freeman fought back to win at the No. 1 position, but the Colonials had already clinched the match at No. 4. GW put itself in position for the upset by sweeping the opening three matches, including five-set decisions at No. 3 and No. 9. Senior Augie Jones (No. 5) and sophomore Ben Francis (No. 8) accounted for the Big Red's other two points.

Coming off its first loss of the season Saturday at Rochester, No. 1 Trinity wrapped up the day by handing Cornell a 9-0 loss. The Bantams swept seven of the nine scoring matches, with sophomore Andy Muran (No. 3) and junior Ian Rothweiler (No. 9) extending their respective matches to four set. The match was Rothweiler's first of the year.
