ITHACA, N.Y. -- Sophomore
Matt Morgan led four double figure scorers with 22 points and Cornell evened its Ivy record with a 75-62 victory over Dartmouth on Saturday evening at Newman Arena. The Big Red improved to 6-13 (2-2 Ivy), while the Big Green fell to 3-14 (0-4 Ivy) in the 213th all-time meeting between the programs.
Morgan added a team-high seven rebounds to the cause, matching classmate
Stone Gettings' total. Gettings added 15 points and four assists. Junior
Wil Bathurst notched 16 points, four rebounds and three assists, while sophomore
Troy Whiteside had 11 points and six boards. Senior
Darryl Smith had four points and five rebounds off the bench. Cornell shot 46 percent from the floor and limited the Big Green to 41 percent shooting overall and just 4-of-21 from the 3-point arc.
Dartmouth's Evan Boudreaux had 23 points and 14 rebounds to lead Dartmouth, but was the lone double figure scorer. Guilien Smith had nine points, both Brendan Barry and Taylor Johnson scored six and Miles Wright scored seven to go along with his six rebounds. The Big Green shot 48 percent in the second half after hitting on just 32 percent of its shots in the first 20 minutes.
The Big Red scored less than a minute in and never trailed, leading by as much as 14 in the final minutes but holding a two possession advantage for the final 28 minutes. Cornell led 7-0 out of the gates and shrugged off the Big Green getting within one point on a Brendan Barry 3-pointer with 13:01 left in the first half, as Whiteside immedaitely canned a trey of his own to push the lead back to four. Dartmouth would never get as close again.
Cornell was never seriously threatened after halftime, where Morgan hit a 25-footer at the buzzer to send the home team into the break up 35-23. The visitors closed it to five (54-49) with 8:33 remaining, but
Darryl Smith scored on a duck-in and two possessions later, Whiteside scored on a great feed from Gettings and Gettings got a lucky bounce on a driving attempt to complete a three-point play. All of a sudden, Cornell was back up 11 and the Big Red cruised from there.
