MANSFIELD, Pa. – The sprint football team continued on its season in dominant fashion once again, defeating Mansfield, 35-14, at Karl Van Norman Field on Saturday night.
After a quiet first quarter, the team rattled off three touchdowns in the second period and also added touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters to earn the victory against the Mountaineers.
Mansfield (0-3) got off to a hot start, putting up seven points in the first quarter, but the second quarter was all Cornell (2-0) as the Big Red quickly erased its deficit after a 20-yard completion from quarterback
Connor Ostrander to
Karriem Royster kick-started the scoring for Cornell.
After a quick three and out for the Mountaineers, Ostrander himself found the end zone, rushing for 15 yards to put the team up, 14-7. The Big Red recorded its third score of the quarter following a fumble by the opposition that was forced by
Alfonso Nazzaro and recovered by
Dominic LaBell.
Jack Nicoletti helped put the squad up 21-7 as he earned his first touchdown of the season after hauling in a 22-yard pass from Ostrander.
However, Mansfield would not go down without a fight. Early in the third quarter, Mansfield's Adam Hutchison would throw a touchdown pass to D.J. McLean to cut its deficit to 21-14, but Cornell responded with a touchdown of its own as Ostrander ran in his second score of the day for seven yards to make it 28-14.
The team would go on to notch one more score early in the fourth quarter with
Brooks Panhans hauling in a five-yard pass from Ostrander to solidify the end result, 35-14.
Ostrander finished out the game completing 26 passes on 36 attempts for a total of 286 yards while
Will Griffen once again stood out amongst the running backs, netting 94 yards on 14 carries. Royster led the receivers with 108 yards on six receptions while Nicoletti also made six catches for 67 yards.
Alfonso Nazzaro led the team in tackles with seven, five of which were solo.
Amanze Udebiuwa recorded six total tackles, one for loss, and assisted with one sack.
Conrad McCarthy also tallied five tackles and notched two tackles for loss while being credited with 1.5 sacks.
Kicking specialist
Ben Finkelstein was a perfect five-for-five on PATs.
The team returns home next week as it hosts reigning CSFL champion Penn at Schoellkopf Field. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. on Oct. 6.
