Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Hill Nets Game Winner in 2OT to Push Men's Soccer Over Brown, 1-0

ITHACA, N.Y. – Just over a month ago, Ryan Hill scored the game-winning goal at then-No. 11 Syracuse to kickstart Cornell's six-game unbeaten streak. On Saturday night at Berman Field, Hill notched the golden goal early in double overtime to lift the Big Red over Brown, 1-0, on Homecoming Weekend.

"It was a wonderful game," said head coach John Smith. "I think that Brown definitely shaded the first half and I don't think we came out with the right intensity. I think the guys have realized that in the Ivy League games it's an absolute physical battle. If you don't come prepared already for the physical battle, you're going to struggle and we did in the first 20 to 25 minutes of the first half."

The victory had much significance as it not only gave the team its seventh win of the year and second victory in league play, but also because it marked the first time since 1992 that Cornell (7-5-2, 2-1-1 Ivy) has defeated the Bears (6-4-2, 1-2-1) in Ithaca.

The final play of the game was set up from a cross by Harry Fuller from inside the 18-yard box where Hill knocked in the shot to beat the keeper just 52 seconds into the second overtime period.

Goalkeeper Mitchell Meyer had himself a game as well, recording a season-high six saves to earn his third shutout of the year.

The Big Red nearly sealed the game in the waning seconds of regulation as Tyler Bagley sent a Hail Mary shot from midfield, but the ball just sailed over the crossbar to keep the game deadlocked at 0-0.

Bagley led the team with four shots while Tommy Hansan and Jonathan Cullom both notched three each.

Despite the shot column being pretty even with Cornell holding the slight advantage, 16-15, the Big Red had the momentum swinging in its favor in the second half of the game with many great sequences occurring in front of Brown's net.

"The great thing is that the guys made adjustments on their own within the half," said Smith. "That's exciting for me to know that they didn't need me to say anything and we started to come into it. The second half was a different game – we controlled the game in the second half."

The squad also showcased its ability to put pressure on the opposition while also being able to keep possession in its favor, earning nine corner kicks on the evening while Brown only managed to record one.

"I think we've done well so far in the Ivy League," said Smith. "All we're doing currently is taking it one game at a time. We're not looking ahead beyond Princeton. We'll gear up for Princeton and that'll be another great battle against a great program and it's exciting. We're excited about each game. The guys are excited when they show up for training and that makes it easier for me as a coach."

Cornell hits the road next week to take on Princeton for a 5 p.m. matchup on Oct. 28.
