First-Half Goals Send #15 Princeton Past Women's Soccer

Box Score (PDF)

PRINCETON, N.J. — The women's soccer team's lengthy stretch of not surrendering on a goal on the road came to a close Saturday, as nationally-ranked Princeton scored twice in the first half and held off the Big Red for a 2-0 win at Roberts Stadium.

Mimi Asom set up Vanessa Gregoire's goal in the 31st minute, then scored one of her own from the penalty spot with just 34 seconds left before the half for Princeton (13-2, 5-1 Ivy League). Junior goalkeeper Meghan Kennedy, who leads the Ivy League in average saves per game, made a career-high 11 stops against the Tigers.

The first goal came with Asom posting up a defender inside the 18-yard box, then laying a pass back to Gregoire toward the arc. She wiggled free of her defender and slotted a perfect shot just inside the far post to end a Cornell (2-8-3, 0-4-2) streak of 398 minutes and 37 seconds since it had conceded a goal on the road. The stretch dated all the way back to the season's third game Sept. 8 at Buffalo.

Asom doubled the lead in the 45th minute after the Tigers earned a spot kick with a foul inside the penalty area. A back-heel pass from Tomi Kennedy set up Olivia Kane, who took a touch and was lining up a shot from about 12 yards when her feet got tangled with a defender. Asom made short work of the opportunity with a strong finish for her eighth goal of the season.

Cornell forced three saves from Princeton goalkeeper Natalie Grossi, who posted her ninth clean sheet of the season.

The Big Red wraps up its season at 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4 at Dartmouth.
