ITHACA, N.Y. — Senior forward
Paige DeLoach scored her second goal of the season, but Murphy Agnew set up a pair of Harvard goals just before and after halftime to lead the visiting Crimson to a 3-1 victory in women's soccer on Saturday afternoon at sunny Berman Field.
Harvard (7-5, 1-2 Ivy League) took a lead in the seventh minute when Leah Mohammadi's corner kick from the left side created confusion between the goalkeeper and the defender standing on the near post, allowing Niki Young to have the ball clatter off her shins along the goal line and in.
But Cornell (2-5-2, 0-2-1) equalized inside five minutes on a quick strike from the Big Red's target forward. Junior
Grace Keller created the play, causing a turnover off the Harvard back line along the left side and threading a ball up the middle and into the path of DeLoach. She sped past the central defense and met the ball around 15 yards from goal, sliding a shot along the grass that caromed off the post. But she was the only player to follow the play, easily converting the rebound for Cornell's first goal in a four-game stretch.
After making a career-high 10 saves in her last outing, junior goalkeeper
Meghan Kennedy seemed poised to top that effort after making seven stops in just the first half of Saturday's tilt. Right on 31 minutes, she used quick hands to stop a one-on-one offering from Agnew. About two and a half minutes later, she repeated the effort against Agnew, then quickly got to her feet to similarly swat away a shot from Maggie Basta on the rebound.
But the Crimson finally found the solution on its next attempt — specifically, Agnew became the distributor from the left side for two fairly simple conversions. The first was in the 38th minute, cashed in by Dani Stollar for what would amount to be the winner.
Lauren Raimondo scored the visitors' third goal in the 55th minute. That looked to be a valuable insurance tally about seven minutes later when senior midfielder
Meera Dheer and DeLoach worked several passes between them and DeLoach was fouled inside the box — but Crimson goalkeeper Kat Hess was equal to the offering as one of her three saves in the second half.
Cornell is next in action at 7 p.m. Monday, when it hosts Colgate in its non-league finale at Berman Field.
