ITHACA, N.Y. — The women's soccer team played even with Patriot League contender Colgate into the second half, but the Raiders got a pinpoint strike from Abby Sotomayor in the 59th minute and held off the Big Red for a 1-0 victory through the heavy mist on Monday night at Berman Field.
Cornell (2-6-2) held the edge in possession in the early going, but sophomore goalkeeper
Chrissy Mayer had the biggest stop of the first half in the 18th minute. A pass up the middle to Natalie Kozlowski turned into a late-breaking scoring chance when she emerged with the ball between defenders, but Mayer timed her charge perfectly and cut down the angle to smother the shot.
At the other end, Cornell directed a couple of shots on target in the opening 45 minutes. Perhaps the closest calls came on a pair of late corner kicks, resulting in a shot by
Carolyn Ruoff that was deflected wide and one by
Kennedy Yearby that soared by the near post.
The Big Red threatened again early in the second half. A punched clearance on
Naomi Jaffe's cross allowed Ruoff to have a shot from 25 yards that went wide. A couple minutes later, sophomore midfielder
Juliana Comer dribbled into the middle of the field and unleashed a shot from 20 yards that soared over the crossbar.
Colgate (8-4-1) finally broke through after a deep ball into the left corner caused trouble. An attempted clear didn't gain much ground, Sotomayor teed up a shot from about 25 yards that grazed off the wet glove of a diving Mayer and tucked high inside the far post. The victory extended the Raiders' unbeaten streak to eight games.
The Big Red returns to Ivy League play for the remainder of its season, starting with a trip to take on Yale at 2 p.m. Saturday.
