WBKB Hands Stony Brook First Loss in 48-40 Victory

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Big Red women's basketball team jumped out to an 8-0 lead and never looked back, leading wire-to-wire and handing Stony Brook its first loss of the season in a 48-40 decision this evening in Newman Arena. The win snapped the Seawolves three game winning streak in the series and was Cornell's first home win of the season.

Cornell (2-5) was led by Samantha Widmann and Samantha Clement with 14 and 11 points, respectively. Widmann also finished with three steals, two assists and two rebounds, while Clement's 11 points were a career-high. Freshman Elodie Furey lead the Big Red in rebounding for the second straight game and the fourth time of the season with nine boards, while Christine Ehland finished with six rebounds.

Stony Brook (5-1) was led by Cheyenne Clark who finished the game with 11 points, nine rebounds and four steals. The Seawolves leading scorer, Shania Johnson, was held to just three points, 12 below her season average.

Cornell had one of its best shooting games of the season, connecting on .391 percent from the floor (18-46), while holding the visitors to just .269 overall (14-52) and a mere .111 percent from beyond the arc (2-18).

Both teams finished with 35 rebounds and 20 turnovers.

The Big Red held Stony Brook scoreless for the first 6:29 of the game as it built an 8-0 lead before McKenzie Bushee got the visitors on the board with a layup. The Seawolves got a stop and scored on their next possession to make it an 8-4 contest, but a trey from Clement and a jumper from Ehland made it a 13-4 game at the first break.

After an early second quarter bucket by Stony Brook made it a 13-6 game Cornell responded with eight unanswered points – including four from Widmann and two each from Janee Dennis and Stephanie Umeh – to take a double digit lead, 21-6 at the 6:27 mark. Another run got the visitors back within single digits (25-18), but a trey at the buzzer by Dennis sent Cornell into the intermission with a 28-18 advantage.

Cornell maintained a double-digit lead throughout most of the third quarter and pushed its advantage to a game-high 19 points (45-26) on a layup from Umeh with just under eight minutes to play. Stony Brook closed the game on a 14-3 run but the Big Red held on for the 48-40 victory.

The Big Red will return from the 14-day exam break when it welcomes Oakland University to Newman Arena on Saturday, Dec. 16 at noon.
