CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Senior
Augie Jones and sophomore
Perry Hanson won their respective matches, but the men's squash team suffered a 7-2 loss to Princeton on Saturday in the semifinals of the Hoehn Cup at Harvard's Murr Center.
Two of the three matches in the opening rotation went to five sets, but Princeton (6-9) prevailed in both to open up a 3-0 lead. The Tigers, who entered the weekend ranked 10th in the country and was subsequently the tournament's second seed, then shook off Jones' victory at the No. 5 position to win the other two tilts in the middle rotation and clinch the match.
Hanson later won in three sets for the second time this weekend to account of the Big Red's second point.
Cornell (7-11) entered the Hoehn Cup — which is the College Squash Association's 'B' Division national championship for teams ranked ninth through 16th in the country — ranked 14th. After an 8-1 upset victory over 11th-seeded Navy in a Friday quarterfinal, the Big Red is now in a position to finish no worse than 12th overall.
Cornell will take on 13th-seeded George Washington in the 11th-place playoff at 11 a.m. Sunday at Brooks School in North Andover. GW (8-8) lost by a 7-2 score in the semifinals to the bracket's top seed, Dartmouth, on Saturday. The Colonials opened play on Friday with a 6-3 win over 12th-seeded Western Ontario.
Cornell and GW have actually meant once before this season, with Colonials recording a 5-4 victory on Jan. 22 at Belkin International Squash Courts in Ithaca, N.Y.
