Late Basket Gives Penn Win Over Men's Hoops

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Sophomore Matt Morgan had a game-high 26 points, but AJ Broduer's jumper in the lane with 36 seconds remaining put the visiting Quakers ahead for good in a 69-66 Penn victory on Friday evening at Newman Arena. Penn moved into fourth place in the Ivy League standings by evening its record at 12-12 (5-6 Ivy), while Cornell fell to 7-19 (3-8 Ivy).

Morgan hit five 3-pointers and scored 18 of his points in the second half as the Big Red erased a 12-point Quaker second half lead to gain a four-point advantage with five minutes to play. Cornell scored just one field goal in the final three minutes as the road team outscored the Big Red 10-3 over that span to earn the comeback win.

Ryan Betley had 21 points, five rebounds, five steals, two assists and two blocks to lead the Penn charge, while Brodeur added 13 points and six boards and Jackson Donahue had 11 points, including a key 3-pointer that closed a four-point Big Red lead to one with under two minutes to play. Penn shot 50 percent from the floor overall, incuding 52 percent in the first half.

Wil Bathurst scored 15 points, while Robert Hatter scored nine points, dished four assists, had two steals and a blocked shot for the Big Red. Stone Gettings had a game-high 10 rebounds as the Big Red held a 37-30 edge on the glass, including collecting a season-high 15 offensive boards. Gettings added six points and three blocked shots.

The Quakers looked firmly in control with an eight-point halftime lead that they built to double figures less than three minutes into the second half. Cornell responded in a big way, however, going on a 13-0 run over the span of 2:47, with Morgan scoring 10 points over that span. His fastbreak layup after a Wil Bathurst steal gave the Big Red a short-lived 53-51 lead.

Robert Hatter's tough driving layup pushed the Big Red ahead 63-59 with 3:05 remaining, but Donahue hit a trey on the other end to set up the back-and-forth ending. A Tyler Hamilton free throw knotted the game at 63-63 with 80 seconds left, and after a Cornell shot clock violation gave the ball back to Penn with under a minute to play, Brodeur scored the go-ahead basket with just over 30 seconds remaining. The Big Red missed a running jumper in the lane, and after two free throws by the Quakers made it a four-point game, Bathurst hit a 3-pointer on a broken play to get Cornell within one with five seconds left. Darnell Foreman, fouled on the inbounds, hit both free throws giving Cornell the ball with 3.8 seconds left and a chance to tie. The inbounds went to Robert Hatter, who whipped it across court to a streaking Matt Morgan, but the sophomore's shot went long and Penn celebrated its fifth consecutive win after starting league play 0-6.

Cornell will honor seniors Hatter, JoJo Fallas, Desmond Fleming and Braxston Bunce prior to Saturday's 6 p.m. game against Princeton (approximately 5:45 p.m.).
