PRINCETON, N.J. — The women's squash team finished its season on a high note Sunday morning, pulling away from Columbia for a 6-3 victory in the seventh-place match at the Howe Cup. It's the second straight year the Big Red has topped the Lions for a final national ranking of No. 7, and it also gives Cornell a winning record for the 10th time over the last 11 years.
In a match using the College Squash Association's five-court format, the teams were close through the opening matches. Columbia (6-10) won a pair of the early matches, but freshman
Lucy Martin won at No. 8 to avenge a regular-season loss to the same opponent. Sophomore
Nghi Nguyen then steadily rallied from two games down to win in five at the No. 6 position, leaving the teams tied at 2 entering the final five matches.
That's where Cornell (9-8) pulled away. Juniors
Margaux Losty (No. 3) and
Charlotte Knaggs (No. 7) won their matches in three games. Freshman
Madison Miles (No. 5) prevailed in four, and sophomore
Lauren Leizman (No. 9) won her first five-game match of the season.
While Cornell's team-match season in completed, select members from both Big Red teams will compete in the CSA Individual Championships next weekend.
