ITHACA, N.Y. —
Tommy Hansan scored a pair of second-half goals, including the winner off a scramble in the 6-yard box in the 72nd minute, and the men's soccer team rallied for a 2-1 victory over St. Francis Brooklyn on Friday evening at Berman Field.
While Cornell (3-3-1) had its fair share of possession in the first half, St. Francis Brooklyn (5-4) kept 10 players behind the ball and packed the middle third. The Big Red struggled to negotiate the traffic jam and ultimately conceded on an opportunity created by a free kick just off the left edge of the 18-yard box.
Anthony Gimenes took the restart and sent a low liner toward goal that was flicked on by the head of Frederico Curbelo and inside the far post, giving St. Francis Brooklyn the lead inside 24 minutes.
Cornell came out with renewed energy in the second half and gained traction early on. That momentum led to an equalizing goal by Hansan in the 59th minute.
The play started with a throw-in near the center stripe by
Evan Austin. He found the foot of
Caleb McAuslan, whose deft one-touch sent
Tyler Bagley running through the midfield. He advanced a pass into the middle about 25 yards from goal that clattered off defenders before ending up on the feet of Hansan, who slid a shot along the grass inside the far post.
The winner came after a long deep throw-in from
Jonathan Cullom along the left side. As the ball pinged around the box,
George Pedlow poked the ball from the right post back across the goal mouth. The ball appeared to hit
Walter Prince in the shoulder near the top of the 6, then Hansan followed it into the net.
The Big Red held off the Terriers the rest of the way, with
Kepler Despinos clearing a grazed punch attempt with 6:30 left, then a free kick with 2:45 from just outside the left side of the box.
Cornell returns to Berman Field for its next game at 7 p.m. Tuesday, when it hosts regional rival Binghamton.
