Mayer Blanks FDU In First Start; Women's Soccer Earns Tie

Box Score (PDF)

TEANECK, N.J. — Making her first collegiate start in her home state, sophomore goalkeeper Chrissy Mayer made 13 saves to help the women's soccer team earn a scoreless draw in a non-league game Sunday at Fairleigh Dickinson. Mayer's effort marked the most saves for a Cornell women's soccer goalie since 2008.

The first-ever meeting between Cornell (2-4-1) and Fairleigh Dickinson (2-7-2) failed to produce a goal, but it wasn't for a lack of trying. On a steamy afternoon of near 90 degrees on the artificial turf at University Stadium, the teams directed a combined 20 shots on target. Amanda Fitzgerald made seven saves to earn the shutout for the host Knights.

Mayer — who hails from East Windsor, N.J., which is to the south of Fairleigh Dickinson's campus — made her best save in the 55th minute. A cross into the box from the right side pinballed around several players toward the top of the 18-yard box, leading to an open shot from FDU's Viktorija Miseljic that required a diving swat by Mayer to her right.

Cornell had several chances to score after that — including three notable opportunities in a span of four minutes. In the 66th minute, senior forward Paige DeLoach threaded a pass into the box that gave the Big Red a two-on-one, but sophomore forward Kennedy Yearby's shot was blocked. A little more than a minute later, a free kick offering from 20 yards from junior midfielder Jessica Ritchie beat the goalkeeper, only to sail wide of the right post. Then in the 70th minute, senior midfielder Whitney Farber cranked a shot from 20 yards that caromed off a defender.

With a little more than 10 minutes to play in the second half, passes from Farber and freshman forward Nicole Long set up freshman midfielder Shelby Wray for a quick shot from 10 yards, but it went directly into the arms of the goalkeeper.

Both teams then created some opportunities in the overtime periods, with Cornell's best chance coming in the 109th minute as Yearby ripped a shot from the left side of the box that went just wide of the near post.

The last time a Cornell goalkeeper made 13 saves also resulted in a shutout, with Kelly Murphy '12 backstopping the Big Red to a 2-0 road win at Brown on Oct. 26, 2008.

Cornell returns to Ivy League play in its next game at 7 p.m. Friday at Penn.
