Women's Soccer Posts 2nd Straight Shutout in Draw at Penn

PHILADELPHIA — Junior goalkeeper Meghan Kennedy made a career-high 10 saves, and the women's soccer team posted its second straight shutout in a 0-0 deadlock with Penn on Friday night in an Ivy League match at Rhodes Field.

The draw is just the second for Cornell (2-4-2, 0-1-1 Ivy League) in eight all-time trips to the Quakers' home facility, with the Big Red having now held the hosts at bay in each of its last two appearances in Philadelphia.

Coming off a stunning road upset of defending Ivy League champion Harvard last week, Penn (2-5-3, 1-0-1) outshot Cornell by a margin of 14-1 in the first half. But aside from a goal-line clearance by sophomore defender Abby Adams in the 24th minute and a a shot from Penn's Allie Trzaska in the 40th minute that harmlessly caught the outside of the post, the Big Red managed to keep Penn at bay.

Cornell evened the possession scales in the second half and mounted more of a threat. Junior midfielder Grace Keller played a beautiful ball into the path of freshman midfielder Shelby Wray toward the left corner in the 53rd, and her cross was headed by junior forward Paige DeLoach just over the crossbar. In the 82nd minute, the Big Red worked a short corner from the right side that resulted in Wray's chip attempt from about 20 yards that hit the crossbar.

Kennedy made four of her 10 stops in the two overtime periods, including a punch on Katharine Larson's shot in the fourth minute of the first extra frame. The Big Red's back line did admirable work, particularly on the flank behind the efforts of Adams and senior co-captain Kaylee Fitzgerald. The latter also helped in a reserve role in central defense behind the starters of sophomore Kaili Gregory and freshman Maddie Hoitink.

Cornell has now played 288 minutes, 36 seconds without conceding a goal, having now notched consecutive scoreless draws against Penn and Fairleigh Dickinson. The tie marked just the second time since 1995 that the Big Red hasn't lost in a game at Penn. The clean sheet was the second of the year and the fifth in the collegiate career of Kennedy, who earned All-Ivy League honorable mention while ascending to the role of Cornell's primary goalkeeper last year.

Cornell returns to Berman Field for three of its next four games, including an Ivy League contest at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7 against Harvard.
