Third Quarter Surge Lifts Princeton Over Women’s Basketball

PRINCETON, N.J. – After giving Ivy League leading Princeton all it could handle through the first half of play, the Tigers opened the third quarter on a 17-0 run and never looked back en route to the 75-54 victory.

Cornell (4-11, 0-2 Ivy) was led by Samantha Widmann, who finished with 17 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. Samantha Clement followed up her outstanding performance last night against the Quakers with 10 points and three steals, as the only other Big Red in double-digits.

Princeton (13-3, 3-0 Ivy) was led by Leslie Robinson's 16 points and seven rebounds, while Belle Alarie tallied 14 points. Gabrielle Rush (11 points) and Abby Meyers (10) also finished in double-figures, while Taylor Boyer had a game-high nine rebounds.

The Tigers shot better than 50 percent (51.9 percent overall) and dominated the boards (40-24), but finished with one more turnover (21-20). The Big Red shot 37.5 percent from the floor (18-48) for the game and connected on 40 percent from beyond the arc, with Widmann (2-of-2) and Kate Sramac (2-of-3) combining for 4-of-5 treys. Sramac also handed out four assists and registered four steals in a career-high 30 minutes.

Cornell used some tough defense early on, forcing three Princeton turnovers to take the early 8-7 lead over the Tigers at the first media timeout. The teams traded baskets until Alraie closed the first and opened the second quarter with seven unanswered points to put the home team up, 16-10.

The run was ended with a baseline jumper from Clement and Cornell stayed within seven points until a trey from Abby Meyers put Princeton up by double-digits (29-19). Clement answered with a trey, opening a 12-5 run to pull the Big Red within one-possession (34-31) with 2:39 to go in the second quarter. A trey by Widmann made it a two-point game (36-34) at the 1:56 mark and the Tigers took that slim advantage into halftime.

Princeton opened the third quarter with 17 unanswered points, including seven from Robinson, and eventually pushed its lead to a game-high 25 points (70-45) on a trey by Sydney Boyer with 4:43 to play in the contest.

The Big Red will close its current seven-game road streak when it travels to Columbia for a double-header with the men's team on Saturday, Jan. 20. The women tip off against the Lions at 4 p.m., followed by the men's game at 7 p.m.
