Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

No. 5/6 Women’s Hockey Battles To A Draw With Union, 3-3

ITHACA, N.Y. – The No. 5/6 women's hockey team closed out the weekend with a 3-3 draw against Union. A late extra attacker goal by the Dutchwomen with one minute and 28 seconds left in the third secured the tie after a golden goal was failed to be found in the five-minute overtime period.

"I don't think that we came ready to play tonight, said head coach Doug Derraugh. "First 10 to 15 minutes, I just think we thought that we were going to step on the ice tonight and it was going to happen magically and that's not the way it works in our league as I've said over and over again in these press conferences."

"Our league is tough from top to bottom and with them getting the first goal, we kept having to fight our way back. I think we worked hard in the second and third, but at that point it became a game and credit to Union, they got the job done to get the point and that late goal."

The Dutchwomen's Katelynn Russ got things started with a goal 12 minutes in, somehow slipping the puck in from nearside of the net, but Grace Graham evened things up, 1-1, just over seven minutes later after sending in a shot from the near circle.

Union would once again regain its lead early in the second period on a power play. 42 seconds after the penalty on Cornell was called, Megan Ryan sent in a bullet from the high slot that splashed into the far side of the net.

Resiliency was once again the name of the game for the Big Red, notching two goals in the third period to claim a 3-2 lead. Kristin O'Neill struck in the low slot after finishing off a rebound from Willow Slobodzian and Kendra Nealey lit the lamp and sending in an absolute bullet from the top of the far circle.

However, Union would force a tie as Russ cashed in once again, this time with the extra attacker, to push the Dutchwomen to a tie.

Just like the previous night's game against Rensselaer, there was a big difference in the shot differential between the two teams. Cornell once again overwhelmed Union in the shots on goal category, 53-12, and shots attempted, 95-22.

"We certainly got a lot more shots that the other team and we just need to start capitalizing more," said Nealey. "We're definitely working hard on and off the ice and it'll come if we stay together."

Marlene Boissonnault totaled nine saves on the day while Union's Amelia Murray tallied an incredible 50 stops. Boissonnault also recorded her second assist of the season, with the secondary touch on Graham's goal.

The team is once again back home at Lynah Rink next week, hosting Clarkson and St. Lawrence. The game against the Golden Knights is set for Friday, Jan. 26 at 6 p.m. while the match with the Saints is set for Saturday, Jan. 27 at 3 p.m.
