Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

No. 6 Women's Hockey Skates Past No. 8 St. Lawrence, 4-1

ITHACA, N.Y. – The No. 6 women's hockey team rebounded in a big way on Saturday afternoon at Lynah Rink, topping No. 8 St. Lawrence, 4-1, to cap-off the weekend with a win.

"I thought for us it was one of our most consistent efforts, St. Lawrence is a great team," said head coach Doug Derraugh. "I thought overall as far as a 60-minute game goes, I think that this was one of our best efforts. I thought we played with discipline and I thought we did a nice job of supporting one another out there. So overall I was pleased with the effort and I guess the result as well."

Maddie Mills laid claim to two on goals on the day, including the game-opening power play goal en route to a career-high three points (2G, 1A).

Following a shot by Jaime Bourbonnais seven minutes and two seconds into the first period, Mills took advantage of the rebound between the circles and sent in an absolute bullet to kick-start the game scoring. The freshman struck again early in the second to push Cornell to a 3-0 lead, with Mills sneaking the puck in from the far side.

Kristin O'Neill and Amy Curlew also added in scores for the Big Red. O'Neill earned the game winner with three minutes left in the first frame. Brianne Veerman fed the puck in the neutral zone and O'Neill used her speed to fend off four other defensemen in the offensive zone before slipping one past the Saints' Sonjia Shelly.

Curlew put the cherry on top for the squad, notching an empty netter late in the third period to secure the 4-1 result. Curlew got the puck in the neutral zone and juked a defenseman before putting in a shot from the high slot that crossed the goal line.

St. Lawrence's Rachael Smith had the lone goal for the Saints, taking advantage of a deflected puck that had settled on the nearside of the net.

Goaltender Marlene Boissonnault made 15 saves to earn the victory while Shelly stopped 22 shots that were sent her way. By the time the final whistle had blown, Cornell was the superior offensive team, racking up 26 shots on goal to SLU's 16.

The team will hit the road next weekend, taking on Ivy League rivals Harvard and Dartmouth. Cornell and Harvard will go face-to-face on Friday, Feb. 2 at 6 p.m. while the game at Dartmouth is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 3.
