PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown's Emma Rosen scored just over two minutes into the second half to break a 0-0 tie and the Bears went on to defeat the Big Red field hockey team, 2-0, this afternoon in Providence, R.I. The game concludes a three-game road trip for Cornell as the team returns to Marsha Dodson Field for a midweek contest against Lafayette at 4 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 22.
The game was very even with Brown holding the 13-10 edge in shots (6-4 on goal) and a 6-3 advantage in penalty corners.
Both teams had a great scoring opportunity late in the first half, with a shot by Gina Openshaw being padded away by
Maddie Henry before
Gabby DePetro's shot from the top of the circle was stopped by Katie Hammaker.
Rosen scored in the 37th minute after Hannah Leckey's penalty corner shot was saved off the line by
Kirsten Pienaar, who entered the weekend ranked 13th in the nation in defensive saves. Unfortunately for the visitors, the ball couldn't clear the circle and Rosen put Brown up, 1-0.
Cornell had a great chance to get the equalizer just moments later, but Pienaar had a pair of shots turned away by Hammaker to preserve the shutout.
The Big Red had one last chance to knot the game but Hammaker made her fourth and final save of the day on a shot by
Isabel Windham.
Brown added a late insurance goal on a penalty corner tally from Rachel Lanoutte at the 58:02 mark.
Henry finished with three saves.
