Lengthy Shootout Caps Annual Red/White Hockey Game

ITHACA, N.Y. — Beau Starrett recorded a hat trick, then Alex Green capped the Red team's 8-6 victory over White with a goal on the 42nd shootout attempt in the annual Red-White Game on Saturday night at Lynah Rink.

The intrasquad game featured two 28-minute halves. The men's and women's teams alternated pairs of shifts throughout. Power plays were awarded evenly at set times throughout the game, as were four-on-four situations. Any infractions that were detected by the officials resulted in penalty shots.

The men's team did most of the scoring in the first half with five of the six goals. Red took a 5-3 lead into the middle of the second half when Chase Brakel's power-play goal cut the deficit to one. The White team scored four of the five women's goals, including Paige Lewis' goal on a delayed penalty to tie the game at 5. Lenka Serdar has the primary assist, then scored on the ensuing penalty shot to give White a 6-5 lead, its first of the night. Lewis and Serdar led the women's team with a goal and an assist apiece.

But Red stormed ahead for good on a pair of extra-attacker goals from Starrett and Jaime Bourbonnais to take a 7-6 lead at the end of regulation.

The teams then engaged in the traditional shootout to end the festivities with the goaltenders stealing the show. With no goals to speak of, goaltenders Nate McDonald, Austin McGrath and Marlene Boissonault tried to kick-start the offense to no avail. Even referee Matt Wyld tried his luck only to be turned away by McGrath's right pad. Finally, Green ignited the crowd with a goal to end the night.

Both teams will now prepare for their respective season-openers and a very busy week at Lynah Rink. The women's team starts first with a non-league game against Syracuse at 7 p.m. Tuesday, then the men's team hosts a two-game series against Michigan State at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Preceding both of those games will be the women's team's ECAC Hockey openers against Harvard (3 p.m. Friday) and Dartmouth (3 p.m. Saturday).
