Sprint Football Tops St. Thomas Aquinas 30-15

SPARKILL, N.Y. – The Cornell sprint football team used 23 fourth quarter points to work its way past St. Thomas Aquinas, 30-15. The Big Red is now 3-1 on the season and 1-0 in divisional play, while the Spartans fell to 2-2 and 1-2 in CSFL North play.

After being held scoreless in the first half, the Big Red started the second half off with an explosive kickoff return by Colton Kotecki to the St. Thomas Aquinas 35-yardline. Cornell took the 7-6 lead later in the drive on a Connor Ostrander keeper.

The Spartans regained the lead with a field goal giving them the 9-7 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Then the Big Red's offense turned it up a notch in the fourth quarter. On the first drive of the final frame, Will Griffen connected with Brooks Panhans for a fake run touchdown pass. Griffen took a pitch to the right and quickly floated a pass to Panhans who stood all alone in the endzone. On the two-point conversion Connor Ostrander faked the handoff to Griffen and found Panhans again all alone in the endzone to put the Big Red up 15-9 with 12:01 remaining.

On the next drive the Big Red put Griffen's legs to work. The senior running back punched it in up the gut, breaking two tackles before finding the back of the endzone on a second and goal play. On the two-point conversion, the Big Red broke out a trick play. Ostrander took the snap out of the shotgun and handed it off to Griffen, who took a few strides with it before handing it off to Aneesh Agrawal. Agrawal then threw the ball back to Ostrander who trotted into the endzone uncontested, to put the Big Red up 23-6.

The drive was set up by a blocked punt near midfield from Jacob Levy and a return down to the Spartans three-yard line by Collin Stockton.

After the Spartans fumbled the ball in their own territory, the Big Red took over with solid field position. JR Quinones capped off the drive with his first career touchdown on a run up the middle. Ben Finkelstein added the extra point to put the Big Red up 30-7.

The Spartans added a touchdown and a two-point conversion to make the final score 30-15.

Cornell has its final home game of the season next weekend when it takes on Post at 7 p.m. on Friday.
