Trio Named Men's Basketball Captains

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Seniors Jack Gordon, Steven Julian and Matt Morgan have been named captains for the 2018-19 Cornell men's basketball season. The Big Red kicks off the campaign on Tuesday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. when they visit Binghamton in the first game of the Central New York Classic.

Gordon is a two-year letter winner who had a breakout season a year ago, averaging 7.1 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 27 games with 13 starts. He ranked fourth in the Ivy League in 3-point field goal percentage (.430) and shot 48 percent overall. Gordon tied a school record by hitting five 3-pointers without a miss in a win over Central Penn. A career 44 percent shooter from beyond the arc, Gordon enters his senior season at the top of that list in school history.

Julian, who joined Cornell a year ago as a junior college transfer, averaged 6.7 points, 5.8 rebounds, 1.2 assists, 1.4 blocks and 1.1 steals while shooting 51 percent from the floor in 28 starts a year ago. He was second in the Ivy League in blocked shots, sixth in steals and seventh in rebounding. Julian scored 10 points, grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds and dished three assists in the double overtime loss at Harvard and netted a career-high 13 points and added eight rebounds, two blocks and a steal in the triple overtime win over Princeton. Despite playing just one season, Julian is on the cusp of joining the top 10 career shot blockers in Big Red history.

Morgan was a first-team All-Ivy League selection and a Lou Henson All-America selection in 2018 after leading the Ivy League in scoring for a third consecutive season. The nation's 11th-leading scorer as a junior, Morgan averaged 22.5 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.2 assists in guiding Cornell to its first-ever bid to the Ivy League Men's Basketball Tournament. Once there, he earned all-tournament honors. Already No. 3 on the school's career scoring list, he is on pace to set the school record and reach No. 2 on the conference's all-time list. Morgan has set Ivy League and Cornell single-season freshman scoring records, and has the Big Red overall single-season mark. He earned second-team all-league accolades as both a freshman and sophomore. He is a five-time Ivy League Player of the Week and captured Rookie of the Week accolades five times. Morgan has facility records for points (34) and 3-pointers made (7) in a game at Cornell's Newman Arena.
