ITHACA, N.Y. – The Big Red rowing programs wrapped up the fall portion of their schedule by hosting Hobart, Ithaca College, Mercyhurst and Syracuse at the sixth annual Cornell Autumn Classic on Saturday, Nov. 3. Competing in pairs, fours and eights on the Cayuga Inlet, Cornell went on to win four of the eight races in which it competed.
For the fifth year in a row at the Cornell Autumn Classic, the coaching staff used a Dutch style of race competition. The 'Roeivierkamp' (or translated to 'four race camp') format allows a crew to race four different distances. Times of each distance are calculated to determine a winner and rank of all the participants. With this in mind, the staff decided to take on this logistical feat by racing two distances, twice.
Each team was able to field boats in two different 'flights' – a mid-morning flight and a late morning flight. Teams also have the opportunity to race in two different boat classes. Winners and overall rank of participants was determined by adding the 3k time to the Super Sprint time (x3) to give a total time.
The Big Red started the day with a win in the men's pair with Cornell's lightweight D logging a time of 14:26.1. Altogether, four Big Red boats crossed the tape before the fifth-place Hobart crew came in at 14:53.0.
In the women's fours event, Syracuse claimed the top two spots before the Cornell A boat took third in a time of 15:28.3.
The Big Red took second in the women's eight with the Cornell C crew coming in behind Mercyhurst in a time of 13:09.4.
In the men's four, the Cornell heavyweight A crossed the line in a time of 13:15.5, besting the Syracuse A crew (13:31.0) by more than 15 seconds.
The Big Red took two of the top three spots in the men's eight with the lightweight A (13:06.7) and lightweight B (13:10.3) placing second and third, respectively, behind Hobart.
In the afternoon flight, the Cornell heavyweights dominated Ithaca in the men's four, posting a time of 14:05.5, beating the Bombers by nearly 1:15.
Mercyhurst won the women's four posting a time of 16:03.5, besting the second place Big Red, which crossed the line in 16:33.1.
The Big Red also came in second in the women's eight, behind Syracuse (13:41.9).
The Cornell heavyweight A won the final race of the day, edging Syracuse by :01 to win the men's eight in a time of 11:48.4. The Big Red's lightweight A also took fourth in the event.
