SURPRISE, Ariz. — Senior
David Volfson's winning streak through fall tournament play finally came to a close Friday with a 6-4, 6-4 loss to Wake Forest's Petros Chrysochos, the nation's No. 1-ranked player in singles after winning the NCAA singles championship last year, in the Round of 16 at the 2018 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships at Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex.
Having entered the season unranked by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, Volfson won eight straight intercollegiate matches this fall. The first six coming in mid-October's ITA Northeast Regionals for a title that earned him a ticket to compete amongst an elite field in Surprise. But Volfson did more than just compete this week – he rallied for a pair of upsets in the first two rounds against opponents ranked in the national top 30 by the ITA. First was a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory over 16th-ranked Alex Lebedev, of Notre Dame, on Wednesday. The second came after fighting off multiple match points in the second set for a second-round win, 5-7, 7-6(2), 6-2, over 30th-ranked August Holmgren of San Diego on Thursday.
