Yale Pulls Away From Women’s Basketball For 65-55 Victory

ITHACA, N.Y. – Cornell sophomore Samantha Widmann led all scorers with 23 points, but it wasn't enough as the Big Red fell to Yale, 65-55, this evening in Newman Arena. The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for Cornell against the Bulldogs and was Yale's first victory in Ithaca since the 2012-13 season.

Widmann was the only Big Red to score in double-figures and she also finished with a game-high 11 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. Christine Ehland and Samantha Clement both chipped in eight points apiece.

Yale (12-9, 5-3 Ivy) finished with four players in double-digits and was led by Jen Berkowitz's 18 points and eight rebounds.

The Bulldogs shot 47.1 percent both overall (24-51) and from 3-point range (8-17) and held Cornell to just 38.8 percent overall (19-49) and 30.8 percent from beyond the arc (4-13). Yale held the slim 36-30 edge in rebounds and both teams had 19 turnovers.

Yale jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead and Cornell trailed for the majority of the first and second quarters before seven unanswered points by the Big Red made it a two-point game with 3:08 to go until the intermission. The Bulldogs killed the home team's momentum when a trey from Roxy Barahman opened up a decisive 16-5 run over the close of the second and the start of the third period.

Cornell made one last push late in the fourth quarter to get within eight points on a layup from Widmann with 4:54 to play, but that was as close as it got, as Yale had an answer for every Big Red bucket down the stretch.

Cornell (6-15, 2-6 Ivy) remains in Ithaca to play host to Princeton and Penn on Friday, Feb. 16 and Saturday, Feb. 17, respectively. Cornell will tip off against the Tigers at 6 p.m., with the game vs. the Quakers slated for 4 p.m. Both games will be double-headers with the men's program facing Princeton (8:00 p.m.) and Penn (6:30).
