NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore
Lev Kazakov won in both singles and doubles, and the men's tennis team advanced to the semifinals of the ECAC Indoor Championships on Friday with a 4-1 victory over Penn at Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center.
Kazakov teamed with junior
Jake Hansen, competing at the No. 1 doubles position for the first time this season. They won, 6-3, but Penn (2-4) took the other doubles matches to capture the day's first point.
Cornell (3-3) stormed through singles unscathed, with Kazakov (No. 3) and sophomore
Pietro Rimondini (No. 5) giving the Big Red the lead. Freshman
Alafia Ayeni was next off court with a 7-6, 6-2 win at No. 2 to give Cornell a 3-1 lead with the remaining three matches into a third set, then senior
Daniel Grunberger wrapped it up from the No. 4 spot, improving to 5-1 in dual matches this season.
The Big Red will next take on second-seeded Harvard at 6 p.m. Saturday in the semifinals. The other semifinal will see top-seeded Dartmouth battle with Princeton at noon. All of this weekend's matches from the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center will be broadcast on subscription-based Ivy League Network.
