ITHACA, N.Y. – The women's tennis team will compete with Indiana for the first time and – after a late modification to the schedule – take on Binghamton, continuing a six-match home stand this weekend at Reis Tennis Center.
Cornell has climbed above .500 for a second time this season, improving to 5-4 after victories over Connecticut and Rutgers. Four members of the team won both of their respective singles matches, with both senior
Priyanka Shah (No. 1) and sophomore
Ananya Dua (No. 3) winning their tilts in straight sets. The Big Red also shuffled the lower portion of its doubles order, with the new tandem of junior
Michelle Wang and freshman
Cheyenne Lilienthal going 2-0 from the No. 3 position.
The match against Indiana gets started at 5 p.m. Friday. The Hoosiers are 9-2 after starting the dual season with eight straight victories. A pair of narrow 4-3 losses to Tennessee and Notre Dame, Indiana rebounded with a 4-0 win over Wright State on Sunday evening. The Hoosiers are 19-1 from the top two singles positions, led by Madison Appel's 8-0 mark at No. 1. The doubles team of Caitlin Bernard and Jelly Bozovic are 7-0, typically at No. 3.
While originally slated to oppose Seton Hall on Saturday, that match has been scrapped and Cornell will now complete the weekend with a 9 a.m. Sunday match against regional rival Binghamton.
The Bearcats enter a busy weekend at 1-5, with the match against the Big Red serving as its third match in three days after visits to Drexel on Friday and Lehigh on Saturday. Binghamton suffered a pair of losses last weekend to Quinnipiac, 5-2, and NJIT, 6-1. Sophomore Samara Eisenberg leads the team with three singles victories from the top of the order. The Big Red is 17-2 all-time against the Bearcats after a 7-0 victory last year.
Both of this weekend's matches are free to attend and open to the public.
