ITHACA, N.Y. – The Brown women's basketball team jumped out to a 20-2 lead and never looked back, leading wire-to-wire in an 85-59 victory over the Big Red this evening at the Pizzitola Center in Providence, R.I. Cornell (6-19, 2-10 Ivy) will close out the season next weekend and honor its three seniors – Janée Dennis,
Christine Ehland, and
Jamie Hill – when it plays host to Harvard (Friday, March 2 at 6 p.m.) and Dartmouth (Saturday, March 3 at 5 p.m.) at Newman Arena.
Samantha Clement lead the Big Red with 11 points and three steals. Both
Samantha Widmann and
Dylan Higgins finished with eight points with Widmann grabbing a team-high six rebounds and registering two assists and two steals. Cornell received contributions up-and-down the lineup with 32 points off the bench, compared to just four by the home team.
Cold shooting doomed the Big Red as the visitors connected on just 26.2 percent from the floor (17-65), its lowest mark this season in Ivy League play, and just 6.3 percent from 3-point range (1-16).
Brown (15-10, 3-9 Ivy) saw nearly all of its points come from three players – Justin Gaziano (30), Shayna Mehta (28) and Erika Steeves (13) – and the home team shot 57.8 percent overall (26-45) and an impressive 50 percent from beyond the arc (9-18).
The Bears held the edge in rebounds (38-31), but Cornell's aggressive defense and press lead to 24 Brown turnovers, while the Big Red had just 15 miscues.
