ITHACA, N.Y. – Princeton rebounded from its close 2-1 loss on Friday night, topping No. 5 women's hockey, 5-4, in overtime on Saturday at Lynah Rink. The two-game split now forces a game three to be played to decide who will advance to the ECAC Hockey semifinals.
It was the Tigers' Annie MacDonald who earned the win for her team, lighting the lamp six minutes and 14 seconds into OT. Princeton fought back from deficits twice in regulation to send it to extra time with it all knotted up 4-4 after 60 minutes had past.
The freshman duo of
Devon Facchinato and
Kendra Nealey got Cornell off to a fast 2-0 early in the first with both scores coming just 26 seconds apart.
Maddie Mills fed Facchinato from the outside edge of the circle as the latter was skating down the slot. As Facchinato skated in between the circles, she ripped off a shot that Princeton's Stephanie Neatby had no chance of stopping to earn her first-career goal.
Nealey added in another 5:11 into the first period after intercepting a puck that a Tiger skater attempted to clear out. Situated at the left point, the freshman took a couple of small strides before slapping in a shot that cut through traffic and ended up in the back of the net. The score was No. 4's fourth goal of the season.
However, Princeton would bounce back from its two-goal disadvantage and score three in a row in just 5:34 of playing time. With less than a second left on the clock in the first, Stephanie Sucharda struck on a power play to close out the first 20 minutes of action.
Sarah Verbeek and Carly Bullock would then add in scores of their own at 3:06 and 5:33 of the second frame with Bullock recording yet another power play goal for the visitors. But it was time for the Big Red to overcome a deficit of its own as the team notched two late scores in the second to go into the second intermission with a 4-3 lead.
Diana Buckley found the 3-3 equalizer after cleaning up a shot by
Grace Graham that got saved by Neatby's right pad. Buckley snuck in the rebound from the far post and had caught Neatby off guard as she didn't have time to react to the puck slipping past her.
Amy Curlew set up Cornell's final goal of the night after wrapping around the far post and feeding
Lenka Serdar, who got the puck past the goal line after crashing into the crease. The score was the junior's fourth of the year.
Princeton would lay claim to the game's lone goal of the third period, 16:22 in, to force extra time following an unassisted score by Sharon Frankel.
Game three of the ECAC Hockey Quarterfinals is set for 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 25 at Lynah Rink.
