ITHACA, N.Y. — Playing against its highest-ranked opponent in recent memory, the women's tennis was dealt a 7-0 loss by Auburn on Friday evening at Reis Tennis Center.
Auburn (6-0) remained perfect in dual doubles matches this season (13-0), though the Big Red tandem of senior
Priyanka Shah and junior
Mariko Iinuma came close to a major upset, forcing a super tiebreaker at the No. 1 position against a duo ranked 31st in the nation.
Cornell (2-1) fell in the first three singles matches to reach completion, with a fourth straight-sets decision coming at No. 2 after Iinuma reached a second-set tiebreaker against a nationally-ranked opponent. Shah (No. 1) and junior
Michelle Wang (No. 5) won the first sets of their respective matches, but hen went to a super tiebreaker after falling in the second sets. The Tigers won both of them to complete the sweep in the first-ever meeting between the programs.
The Big Red will conclude the weekend with a 1 p.m. Sunday match against NJIT. The match is open to the public and free to attend.
