HANOVER, N.H. – No. 5 women's hockey emerged from an important Ivy League weekend undefeated following a 3-1 win over Dartmouth at Thompson Arena on Saturday. A two-goal first period helped propel the team to its sixth-straight win over the Big Green.
Brianna Veerman set the tone with a power play goal 12 minutes and 24 seconds into the contest. Veerman cashed in on a rebound following a snipe by
Jaime Bourbonnais to notch her second goal of the weekend. The senior is now on a four-game point streak.
Joie Phelps was next to strike in the first frame, getting a touch in front of the net on
Willow Slobodzian's shot from the left point to push the squad to a 2-0 advantage.
With 12 seconds remaining on a Big Red power play late in the second,
Paige Lewis extended the team's lead to 3-0 off of feeds from
Diana Buckley and
Lenka Serdar. Despite colliding with a Big Green skater on her way towards the net, Lewis buried the puck into the far side for her fourth goal of the season.
Dartmouth's Tess Bracken spoiled Marlene Boissonnault's chance at a shutout with 7:02 left in the game. Brackett launched off a shot from the far side of the goal line that wound up in the back of the net.
Despite the late momentum for the Big Green, it wasn't enough as Cornell skated out of Thompson with the 3-1 decision.
Dartmouth was not short of opportunities, however. Midway through the first after a faceoff in the near circle of Dartmouth's offensive zone, the Big Green's Linda Essery slapped in a shot that bounced off the left post and ricochet out of harm's way. The Big Green also had other productive sequences in front of Cornell's net, but strong defense and Boissonnault's goaltending neutralized looks the opposition had.
Boissonnault ended her day with 18 saves while Dartmouth's Christie Honor was forced to make 28 stops.
Cornell's top-ranked PK unit only had to kill off one penalty during the match, while special teams went two-of-five on the power play. Bourbonnais led the team with six shots while Slobodzian was first on the squad in blocks with three.
The team is back home at Lynah Rink on Tuesday, Feb. 6 for a 7 p.m. midweek clash against regional rival Syracuse.
