Women's Tennis Gets A Glimpse of Ivy Competition at ECACs

PRINCETON, N.J. – The women's tennis team will make a rare non-league road trip this weekend, when it competes in the ECAC Indoor Championships, hosted by Princeton. All three of Cornell's matches on Friday, Saturday and Sunday will be broadcast on subscription-based Ivy League Digital Network here.

Cornell (2-2) has split both of its two weekends of dual matches so far, most recently rebounding from a 7-0 loss to No. 12 Auburn with a 6-1 win over NJIT on Sunday at Reis Tennis Center. Senior Priyanka Shah and freshman Cheyenne Lilienthal lead the squad with 3-1 records in singles, and Lilienthal and senior Madison Stevens are 2-1 from the No. 2 doubles position.

This year's ECAC Indoor Championships are exclusively the eight Ivy League programs. The Big Red has been seeded third, meaning it will open up at 2 p.m. Friday against sixth-seeded Yale at Jadwin Gymnasium. The Bulldogs have cruised to a 3-0 start, most recently defeating Boston University, 5-2, on Sunday. Samantha Martinelli is a perfect 3-0 in No. 1 singles, with Elizabeth Zordani and Caroline Amos also unbeaten toward the top of the lineup. Martinelli and Zordani recorded a pair of 6-0 victories from No. 1 doubles against Quinnipiac and BU last weekend.

Yale leads the all-time series with Cornell, 31-6, but the Big Red has won Ivy League matches between the squads in each of the last two seasons. Shah has won in singles both years.

Cornell will move on to play either second-seeded Dartmouth or seventh-seeded Columbia on Saturday, either at 5 p.m. after a win or 11 a.m. after a loss. The quarterfinals on the other side of the bracket pit top-seeded Princeton against eighth-seeded Harvard and fourth-seeded Penn against fifth-seeded Brown. Sunday's possible match times are 8 a.m., 9 a.m., 11 a.m. or 2 p.m.
