Dua Caps 4-3 Win Over Yale For Women's Tennis

PRINCETON, N.J. – Sophomore Ananya Dua surged to a three-set victory at No. 3 singles to cap the women's tennis team's 4-3 victory over Yale on Friday at Jadwin Gymnasium in the quarterfinals of the ECAC Indoor Championships.

With the victory, Cornell (3-2) advances to the semifinals at 5 p.m. Saturday against second-seeded Dartmouth, which defeated seventh-seeded Columbia, 4-1, on Friday night. The day's second semifinal will be streamed on subscription-based Ivy League Network here.

On Friday, the third-seeded Big Red won the doubles point before splitting the three singles matches against sixth-seeded Yale (3-1). Dua and junior Michelle Wang got Cornell off on the right foot by winning at No. 3, 6-1, but the Bulldogs won at No. 2 to put the balance of the opening point on the No. 1 spot. Senior Priyanka Shah and junior Mariko Iinuma delivered, 7-5, to give Cornell the early 1-0 lead.

The Bulldogs answered by taking a pair of leads in early singles play – but Cornell won each of the day's three-set matches to win its third straight and its seventh-ever match in 38 meetings with Yale. Lilienthal was first off court at No. 4, then Iinuma won 6-2 in the third at No. 2 to knot the score at 3.

That left it up to Dua at No. 3, with nearly the entire third set yet to be player. She ended up cruising to wrap up a 7-6(6), 0-6, 6-1 win and send Cornell into the semifinals.

In Friday's other quarterfinals, top-seeded Princeton defeated eighth-seeded Harvard, 4-0, and fifth-seeded Brown topped fourth-seeded Penn, 4-2. Princeton and Brown will meet in Saturday's first semifinal at 2 p.m. before Cornell's match.
