ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell softball team split a Monday afternoon doubleheader against Harvard at Niemand*Robison Field, clinching the series win with a 7-2 victory in the nightcap after falling to the Crimson 14-3 in game one. Cornell improved to 7-9 (2-1 Ivy), while Harvard is now 10-11 (3-3 Ivy).
Game One
Harvard scored six runs in the third and five more in the fourth, pounding out 10 hits, taking advantage of four Big Red errors, four walks and three hit batsmen to deliver a mercy-rule five-inning win in the opener.
Rhianna Rich was 3-for-4 with a pair of triples, four RBI and two runs scored, while both Maddy Kaplan and Lindey Kneib drove in three runs each, including Kneib hitting her second homer of the year.
Megan Murray was 2-for-3 and Erin Rockstroh went 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI at the plate in the loss.
Harvard took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Big Red scratched together one in the second to tie the game. The visitors took control with 13 straight runs to lead 14-3 at the end of four and retired the Big Red in the fifth to end the game early.
Game Two
For the second straight day, sophomore Lisa Nelson hurled a complete game victory over the high-powered Crimson bats. She struck out six in 7.0 innings, scattering seven hits and taking advantage of a big six-run second inning explosion by the Cornell offense.
Nelson improved to 4-3 on the season thanks to an offense that collected nine hits, including five doubles – two off the bat of Olivia Lam. Lam was 3-for-3 with a run scored and another driven in, while Erin Rockstroh had two hits, including a double. Megan Murray was 1-for-2 with a pair of walks and both Madeline Avery and Avery Voehl drove in two runs apiece for the home team.
Cornell's six-run explosion came after the Crimson scored two in the first to continue the momentum from game one. The Big Red stole it back, and ultimately Nelson put the game away.
Rockstroh doubled with one out in the second to begin the rally, followed by a Brianna Straley walk. Olivia Lam's hard-hit shot up the middle scored a run, followed by a double down the leftfield line by Voehl to give Cornell the 3-2 lead. After Murray walked and Kubena had an infield single to lead the bases, Avery hit a ground-rule double to left that plated two more. Bridgette Rooney capped the scoring with a squeeze bunt that scored the sixth and final run of the inning.
Cornell added an insurance run in the sixth thanks in large part to an Olivia Lam leadoff double. Ivey Wagner ran for her and scored two batters later when she dislodged the ball from catcher's mitt after taking off for home on a groundout to third.
