ITHACA, N.Y. — Junior
Jake Hansen won his sixth straight singles match after the men's tennis team opened the day by winning the doubles point, but 32nd-ranked Dartmouth left Reis Tennis Center with a 4-2 victory on Saturday.
Cornell (7-10, 0-3 Ivy League) started off on a strong note by winning the doubles point. The deciding match was at the No. 3 position, where senior
Daniel Grunberger teamed with Hansen to win in a tiebreaker, 7-6(5), to give the Big Red an early 1-0 lead.
But Dartmouth (17-5, 3-1) answered back by winning five of the first sets in the six singles tilts. Sophomore
Joseph McAllister clawed back to win the second set and force a third at No. 6, but the Big Green wrapped up the matches on lines 2, 3 and 4 to take a commanding 3-1 lead.
Needing all of the last three matches to go Cornell's way, McAllister started to pull ahead midway through the third set at No. 6. Freshman
Alafia Ayeni held serve to force another tiebreaker in the second set at No. 1, and Hansen won his tiebreaker at No. 5 to notch Cornell's second point. But Dartmouth ended up pulling out the match at No. 1 to clinch.
The Big Red is back in action at 1 p.m. Sunday against 29th-ranked Harvard at Reis Tennis Center. The match is open to the public and free to attend with free pizza provided to the first 100 fans.
