ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell softball team will attempt to right the ship when it visits Penn for a three-game Ivy League series beginning on Saturday, April 21 at 12:30 p.m. at Penn Park. The Big Red will be attempting to snap a four-game skid and surpass last season's win total overall and in conference play in the process.
At 6-6 in Ivy League play, Cornell stands tied for fourth in the Ancient Eight standings with nine games remaining. Coming off a three-game sweep at the hands of conference leader Dartmouth, the Big Red will attempt to make a final charge at one of the top two spots in the league to earn a spot in the Ivy League Championship Series. Cornell is 11-18 on the season and needs a series win to match last year's win total (13-28-1) and surpass its total of Ivy victories (6-14) from 2017.
Cornell enters the week in the middle of the pack in pitching (fifth with a 4.68 team ERA) and near the top in both fielding (second, .962) and batting (third, .282). At the plate, Erin Rockstroh (fourth, .424), Megan Murray (seventh, .402) and Rebecca Kubena (eighth, .370) each rank among the top 10 in batting in the league, while Bridgette Rooney has hit six home runs - one of the Ivy leaders. In the circle, Lisa Nelson is 6-6 with a 3.81 ERA and is tied for the conference lead with 71 strikeouts for head coach Julie Farlow.
The Quakers are 12-18 on the year with three consecutive losses - all at the hands of Harvard. Prior to that, Penn had won eight of nine games. The Quakers are 9-4 at home, but have similar metrics to the Big Red. Both teams are hitting .282, and the team ERAs are nearly identical (4.84 for Penn, 4.68 for Cornell). Regulars Sarah Cwiertnia (.343, 13 RBI), Jurie Joyner (.322, two home runs, 20 RBI) and Molly Oretsky (.316, 16 runs) are each hitting better than .300. Lucy Yang (.244, five home runs, 23 RBI) also ranks among the league leaders in home runs and RBI. Five pitchers have hurled significant innings for the Quakers, with Mason Spichiger leading the way at 3-6 with a 4.02 ERA in 61 innings of work for 15th-year head coach Leslie King.
Cornell leads the all-time series 41-29, including 22-19 in Philadelphia. Since the 2012 campaign, Penn holds a commanding 20-5 edge - including eight wins in the last nine meetings.
