ITHACA, N.Y. -- Kate Jencarelli hit her first career home run at Cornell and Erin Rockstroh had three hits, but crosstown rival Ithaca College rallied for an 8-4 victory on Wednesday afternoon at Niemand-Robison Field. The Big Red fell to 12-21 on the season, while the Bombers improved to 21-8.
Jencarelli's two-run homer highlighted a three-run first inning, but the Bombers got six strong innings of relief from Beth Fleming and overcame the early two-run deficit for its second straight win over the Big Red. Cornell collected 10 hits total, with Rockstroh going 3-for-4 with an RBI and Megan Murray and Brianna Straley each adding a pair of hits.
Fleming came out of the bullpen and allowed just one run and six hits over the final six innings with four strikeouts to pick up her eighth win of the season. Gabby Laccona, Hannah Anderson and Alex Wright each had a pair of hits among 11 total for the Bombers.
Allie Colleran led off the game with a solo home run to set the tone for the Bombers, but the Big Red scored three in the bottom of the frame to stake itself to the early advantage. Ithaca tied it up at 3-3 in the fourth, but Cornell went back ahead after an RBI single by Murray in the bottom of the inning. Ithaca took the lead for good with a three-run fifth, taking advantage of two hit batsmen, a passed ball on a third strike with two outs and an error along with just one hit.
Cornell threatened in the sixth, leaving two runners one, and the seventh when the first two batters reached, but couldn't add to its run total, and Ithaca added two insurance runs in the seventh on an RBI single and a run-scoring groundout.
The Big Red will welcome Ivy foe Columbia for a three-game series beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 28 at 12:30 p.m. at Niemand-Robison Field.
