Lions Sweep Doubleheader Slugfest On Saturday

ITHACA, N.Y. – Cornell and Columbia combined for 12 home runs, 28 extra-base hits, 47 runs and 58 hits, and when the dust settled the Lions swept a Saturday doubleheader by scores of 15-10 and 15-7 at Niemand-Robison Field. The Big Red fell to 12-23 on the year (7-10 Ivy), while the Lions improved to 21-18 (13-7 Ivy).

Columbia had huge third innings in both ends of the doubleheader, putting up eight runs in game one and seven in the nightcap as teams scored at least three runs in eight half-innings in a consistent drizzle.

Game One
Columbia scored eight times in the third inning to break open a tight game, pounded out 17 hits in total and rolled to a 15-10 victory in the first contest.

The Lions hit four home runs, with Madison Gott leading the way with a 4-for-5 effort, including a double and a home run. Taylor Troutt added three hits and a home run. All nine players in the starting lineup had at least one hit and eight scored at least one run.

Kate Jencarelli was 3-for-4 with a double and a home run along with a career-best six RBI. She hit a grand slam in the seventh as Cornell tried to make a late run at the Lions. Tori Togashi was 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBI and three runs scored, while Megan Murray based a double for one of her two hits. Brianna Straley also hit her first career home run in the loss.

Game Two
The Lions collected 19 hits with seven starters tallying at least two, Alexandra Yule slammed two of Columbia's four homers and the Lions rallied from a 5-2 deficit using a seven-run third.

Columbia's Taylor Troutt, Max Ortega and Alexandra Yule each went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI. Troutt had a pair of doubles and a home run, while Ortega also slammed a long ball. Amber Swinarski also had three RBI and added a pair of runs scored, while Amanda Nishihara was 3-for5.

Megan Murray led the Big Red with a 3-for-4 day with a double, two runs scored and two RBI, while Brianna Straley hit her second home run of the day on her way to a 2-for-4 afternoon with two runs scored and three RBI. Zoe Hernandez was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored to kick off her senior weekend.

Maura Lynch slowed down the Big Red offense after it scored five runs in the first two innings, coming out of the bullpen to scatter four hits and two runs over the final five frames to pick up the victory.
