ITHACA, N.Y. – Senior
Ryan Krainz was 2-for-4 with a double, and seniors
Kyle Gallagher and
Ellis Bitar drove in runs in the seventh inning, but the baseball team's come-from-behind efforts came up short in a 6-2 loss to Harvard on Sunday at Hoy Field.
Even with the loss, Cornell (11-18-1, 6-9 Ivy League) won its second straight Ivy League series to keep hopes alive in the playoff race.
Armed with a three-run lead after three innings, starter Simon Rosenblum-Larson starred for the Harvard (20-19, 10-8). He worked around five walks to fan nine, taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning before senior
Pierre Le Dorze's infield single.
With fresh memories of rallying from 4-0 holes in Satuday's doubleheader sweep, the Big Red threatened to repeat the effort in the seventh inning on Sunday. Krainz hit a double down the line to chase Rosenblum-Larson, then Gallagher plated him with a double into the left-center field gap.
Bitar laced a single into center with two out to score Gallagher and cut Cornell's deficit to 3-2. It also extended Bitar's streak of reaching base to 26 games.
Junior
Will Simoneit followed with a double that bounced off third base, extending his hitting streak to 10 games. Junior
Josh Arndt drew a walk to load the bases, but the threat ended with a strikeout. Harvard then tacked on three runs in the next two innings for insurance to avoid being swept.
Senior
Tommy Morris ended up on the short side, but settled down late in his start to yield just three runs (two earned) in 5.1 innings of work. He departed with the bases loaded in the sixth, and senior
Austin Wahl came on to induce a clutch double-play grounder to Simoneit at third.
Cornell returns to action at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, travelling to Vestal for a non-league game at Binghamton.
