ITHACA, N.Y. – Junior
Josh Arndt extended his hitting streak to 10 games, but the baseball team was set back by Yale, 7-4, in the series finale on Monday afternoon at Hoy Field.
In a game bereft of extra-base hits, Yale (11-14, 7-2 Ivy League) made the most of its opportunities. Senior starter
Tyler Fernandez was solid through five innings for Cornell (5-14, 1-5), but he ran into trouble in his third time through the Bulldogs lineup. Dai Dai Otaka hit a two-run single with the bases loaded against the Big Red's first reliever. There were two errors on the play to allow a third run to score, then Tom Fuller singled to center to drive in Otaka for a four-run inning – all with two out – to build Yale's lead to 6-1.
Cornell answered back with three in the bottom of the sixth. Seniors
Kyle Gallagher and
Dale Wickham led off with back-to-back singles, then another base hit from senior
Ellis Bitar allowed Gallagher to score. A pair of run-scoring sacrifice flies followed from junior
Will Simoneit and Arndt, and the Big Red had cut its deficit to two runs.
But the Yale bullpen took care of the rest, working three scoreless frames with just two hits and one walk surrendered. Sophomore
Jeb Bemiss was the Big Red's most effective reliever, working 2.1 scoreless frames.
Cornell plays its fourth home game in as many days when it returns to Hoy Field for a 4:30 p.m. Tuesday non-league contest against Binghamton at Hoy Field.
