ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell softball team will close its 2018 campaign with a three-game Ivy League series at Princeton beginning on Saturday, May 5 at 12:30 p.m. at Class of 1895 Field. Following Saturday's doubleheader, the two teams will meet for a single game on Sunday, May 6 at 12:30 p.m. All three games will be available on the Ivy League Network.
Big Red softball will attempt to finish with a flurry, needing three wins to post a winning Ivy League season (11-10) and an upper division finish after being pick last in the preseason poll. A single win would surpass last season's victory total (13), and a series win would be the Big Red's third of the year.
While a three-game weekend sweep would be rare, it isn't unprecedented between the two teams. Needing a four-game sweep on the road during the 2012 series to claim a share of the division title, the Big Red needed a total of 38 innings over two days to do just that. Included were a pair of 2-1 wins, one over a school-record 14 innings and another going 10. Senior
Alyson Onyon was the difference that weekend, going a perfect 3-0 with a 0.45 ERA and three complete games, hurling 31 innings over three of the wins. She went the distance in both extra-inning victories. Cornell swept a three-game road series at Brown earlier this season, its first under the new scheduling format.
Sophomore Erin Rockstroh (.432, 17 RBI) and senior Megan Murray (.409) are among five Big Red regulars hitting .333 or better. Seniors Rebecca Kubena (.358) and Tori Togashi (.333, four home runs, 23 RBI) join Murray among five Big Red seniors who will be playing their final collegiate games. Zoe Hernandez and Maddie Orcutt will join them. Orcutt, who picked up her first win of the season in Sunday's 10-9, extra-inning win over Columbia, will join sophomores Katie Lew and Cora Geunes in tossing innings this week in the circle after the loss of sophomore Lisa Nelson to injury. She ranked among the Ancient Eight leaders in strikeouts, innings pitched and complete games along with her 7-6 record and 3.74 ERA for head coach Julie Farlow's squad.
At 9-27 on the year (7-11 Ivy), Princeton joins Cornell in looking to finish strong to set itself up for an offseason of growth. The Tigers are 3-6 at home on the year and have lost three straight after being swept on the road last weekend against Penn. Mackenzie Meyer (.341, seven home runs, 16 RBI) and Megan Donahey (.328) lead the offense, while Allie Reynolds (6-14, 5.25 ERA) and Ashley LaGuardia (3-9, 7.14 ERA) have thrown a significant majority of the innings in the circle for head coach Lisa Van Ackeren.
Princeton holds a 38-32 edge in the all-time series, including posting a 10-4 advantage since 2014. The Tigers hold an 18-16 series lead in games played on their home field, including a 5-1 record in the last six matchups.
