Pedlow’s Two Goals Lifts Men’s Soccer Over Niagara

ITHACA, N.Y. – George Pedlow scored two goals in the final eight minutes of the game to push the Cornell men's soccer team past Niagara 3-1 Friday night at Berman Field. The Big Red advanced to 5-2 on the season, while Niagara fell to 2-6.

The first of Pedlow's goals came with exactly eight minutes remaining in regulation. With the score knotted at one, Pedlow found himself in the right place at the right time. Szabolcs Wiksell fired a shot that ricocheted off two Purple Eagle defenders and landed right next to Pedlow. The junior from London collected the ball and snuck it past Steve Casey in net.

Pedlow's second tally came four minutes and 50 seconds later. Harry Fuller sent a beautiful ball from beyond midfield ahead to Pedlow who fielded the pass with no defenders near him. Pedlow took a few strides with the ball, drawing Casey out of net, and tapped in the easy goal.

"They were two good goals by George," head coach John Smith said. "I'm pleased for him because it hasn't been easy so far this season. So it's really nice for him to get on the score sheet and win the game for us."

One of the biggest momentum shifts in the match came on a Ryan Shellow save off a Niagara penalty kick in the 70th minute. With the scored knotted at one, Shellow sprawled to his right punching the ball out of bounds on the attempt from Dylan Avila.

"Shellow made a great save on the penalty kick and that's what really won us the game," Smith said. "If that goes in it's a different story. Afterwards, we started knocking on the door."

The junior goalkeeper finished the contest with five saves on six shots faced and picked up his fifth win of the year.

Niagara opened the scoring just under 14 minutes into the game. Luca Pacheco put in a header to give the Purple Eagles the 1-0 lead.

The tally put the Big Red in a familiar position as now four of its five victories have come after allowing its opponent to score first.

In the 38th minute, Emeka Eneli put home his fourth goal of the season. With a defender charging to clear the ball, Eneli acted quickly with his right foot lifting the ball over the diving Casey.

The Big Red returns to action next Tuesday when it takes on Lehigh in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
