Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Eneli’s Late Strike Lifts Men’s Soccer Over Penn, 1-0

Ithaca, N.Y. – Emeka Eneli's goal just under three minutes into the second overtime period lifted the Cornell men's soccer team over Penn 1-0 in its Ivy League opener Saturday afternoon at Berman Field.

The Big Red is now 7-2 on the season and 1-0 in conference play, while the Quakers dropped to 2-2-3 on the season and 0-1 in Ivy play.

"We faced a very well disciplined team that was always going to be tough to break down," head coach John Smith said. "I thought the guys showed a lot of patience and it took a moment of brilliance from Emeka to decide the game."

After a Cornell corner kick the freshman from Dublin, Ohio, struck the ball and buried it in the back of the net. Eneli now has five goals on the season, the second most in the Ivy League.

The Big Red had several quality chances before Eneli's game-winner, but Penn goalkeeper Scott Forbes did a great job of keeping the Big Red out of the back of the net. Forbes finished the day with 11 saves.

In the second half, George Pedlow had the ball at the top of the box with Forbes out of position. Pedlow fired an attempt and Forbes made the diving stop. After the rebound went straight back to Pedlow, Forbes made another diving stop.

The Big Red finished the game with 18 shots, 12 of which were on goal.

Ryan Shellow collected his second shutout of the season. The junior goalkeeper had four saves on the Quakers' four shots on goal.

Defensively, the Big Red held the Quakers to eight total shots.

Cornell returns to action next Saturday when it takes on Harvard in Cambridge, Massachusetts, at 4 p.m.
