ITHACA, N.Y. – The women's soccer team held a dominating advantage in shots on Wednesday night, but Le Moyne proved to be more opportunistic in a 1-0 victory over the Big Red at Berman Field.
Vittoria Fuduli scored the lone goal of the night for the Dolphins on a free kick in the 48th minute, and Cornell (1-3) dropped its third straight despite firing 19 shots toward the opposition's net. Anastasija Cumika made seven saves for Le Moyne (2-0), plus a defender made another key stop in the 66th minute.
After a wave of substitutions, the Big Red threatened when
Aidan Julia Reineman passed toward the middle and
Mofoluke Obiri headed it back into the center of the box.
Karli Berry was first to it and touched a shot past the charging goalkeeper, only to watch it come off the post.
Nicole Long was next on the scene, but defender Erica Wasserbach made a stop along the goal line before Long's second chance was also deflected away. Even the ensuing corner kick provided a scoring opportunity, but
Shelby Wray powered a header that went over the crossbar.
It proved to be a microcosm of the night for Cornell, which only yielded two shots on target.
Chrissy Mayer made a save on one of them and was strong off her line to cut down several other would-be chances, but she was helpless on the Dolphins' strike. After a foul just outside the upper-left corner of the penalty area, a four-woman wall was aimed at taking away the near post – but Fuduli's shot dropped just inside below the bar.
The Big Red had its fair share of scoring chances in the first half, too. In the 33rd minute, a great run up the left flank by
Julianna Shrekgast and combination with
Carolyn Ruoff led to a pass toward
Kennedy Yearby in the box, but the ball hit a defender and forced a sprawling stop from Cumika.
Five minutes later, a long ball from
Kaili Gregory glanced off a defender's head and allowed Ruoff to cut toward middle, but her shot from 20 yards sailed just high. Then with just 25 seconds left before the break, long service from
Maddie Hoitink toward the far post was settled by
Juliana Comer in the box, but her shot from eight yards was drilled right into the goalkeeper.
Cornell returns to non-league play at 1 p.m. Sunday, when it travels to Vestal for a match against Binghamton.
