Men's Squash Back at Belkin For Trio of Non-League Matches

ITHACA, N.Y. – The men's squash team plays its first home matches of 2019 when it welcomes three foes to Belkin International Squash Courts this week. The stretch starts against Trinity at noon Wednesday before hosting Drexel at 6 p.m. Friday and Western Ontario at 5 p.m. Saturday.

Cornell (1-5), currently 16th in the Dunlop College Squash Rankings, suffered a pair of Ivy League losses on the road last weekend against highly-ranked opponents Harvard and Dartmouth. Freshman Nicholas Göth Errington earned the team's lone point with a four-game victory against the Big Green. Senior Andy Muran and sophomore Yohann Surti continue to lead the team with three individual victories apiece.

Trinity (6-0) continues to hold the No. 1 national ranking after running the table in 20 matches last year and claiming the Potter Cup. That run was threatened by Columbia on Jan. 8, but junior Andrew Lee outlasted his opponent in the fifth game at the No. 7 position for the deciding point. Kush Kumar, Tom De Mulder and Thoboki Mohohlo comprise the top third, all with matching 4-0 records so far.

Drexel (3-6) is currently ranked 11th, having slipped two spots after a 6-3 loss to Princeton on Dec. 6. The Dragons then opened the second semester with a 7-2 loss to fifth-ranked Rochester. Drexel has found most of its success toward the top half its lineup. Matias Kundsen leads the team with a 6-2 record from the No. 2 spot, and Dylan Kachur, Filip Krueger and Luke Willemse each have four victories apiece from positions 3, 4, and 5. Cornell won its first three matches against Drexel since its program's inception seven years ago, but the Dragons have won the most recent four meetings over the last three years.

Western Ontario will be wrapping up the NCAA portion of its regular season this weekend, which starts with a match against Drexel at 11 a.m. Saturday at Belkin. While the Mustangs are currently ranked 12th, they figure to move up after defeating 10th-ranked St. Lawrence, 5-4, last Friday. The Big Red is 14-27 all-time against Western Ontario, with a 6-3 loss last year breaking an eight-match winning streak dating back to the 2008-09 season.
