ITHACA, N.Y. –
Trudy Vande Berg, The Wendy Schaenen '79 Head Coach of Volleyball, has announced the incoming class of 2023, as
Joanna Chang,
Riley Hazelrigg,
Evan Reich and
Emma Worthington will join the Big Red for the upcoming 2019 season. The four student-athletes all hail from different states, and the group consists of two defensive specialists, one outside hitter, and one setter.
"I am so excited for this class to set foot on campus," said Vande Berg. "Each are individually very exciting players and the skillset they bring complements our current roster. They will bring the level of play in our gym to an even higher level as they are incredibly hard-working. They are winners and will add another level of athleticism in their positions that we need to continue to work for an Ivy League Championship."

Joanna Chang – OH – 5-10
(Brecksville-Broadview Heights HS) Cleveland, Ohio
Prior to Cornell
• Four-year letter winner at Brecksville-Broadview Heights HS.
• Helped her team to the 2016 State Championship.
• Named first-team All-Ohio in 2018, after a second-team selection in 2017.
• Member of the AVC Volleyball Club.
Vande Berg on Chang: I remember very distinctly the first time I saw Joanna play at the Mid-East qualifier. I saw her make three plays and didn't need to watch much more, I knew we wanted her in a Big Red uniform. She is a true six rotation outside with great ball control, can hit the ball all angles and terminates off the block out of system. She has played club for a team that was ranked in the top five in the country and was an important part of their success. She knows how to win under pressure and wants the ball. I couldn't be more excited to have Joanna on our team.
Riley Hazelrigg – L/DS – 5-4
(Mira Costa HS) Manhattan Beach, Calif.
Prior to Cornell
• Three-year letter winner at Mira Costa HS.
• Earned four varsity letters in beach volleyball at Mira Costa HS.
• Two-time beach volleyball state champion (2017, 2018).
• Mira Costa's 2017 Pairs Champion.
• Selected to USA beach volleyball High Performance Team (2016).
• Champions at the 34th Annual Ann Kang Invitational Volleyball Tournament.
• Member of the nationally ranked Surfside Volleyball Club.
• Starting libero for eight consecutive seasons.
• Helped the 16s Club to finish second in SCVA out of 272 teams (2017).
• Member of six consecutive Junior Olympic qualifying teams.
• Finished 18th in the Open Division at Junior Olympics (2016).
Vande Berg on Hazelrigg: Riley came to camp right after she completed her freshman year in high school. We knew her name but didn't know much about her. Well, she definitely made an impression! She quickly proved to be the best and most tenacious libero at camp and we knew we wanted her here. She has continued to improve her game and has become a true boss of the back court for her club team. She has been trained by one of Coach Mahoney's college teammates so she is well versed in how we train and our expectations. She is a great and enthusiastic teammate and will make an immediate impact in the gym.
Evan Reich – L – 5-9
(Lake Nona HS) Orlando, Fla.
Prior to Cornell
• Three-year letter winner at Lake Nona HS.
• Served as team captain for three seasons.
• Three-time team MVP.
• Lettered once in softball.
• Member of the Orlando Volleyball Academy/Top Select Volleyball Academy.
• Elected team captain each season from 2012-19.
• AAU National Championship Premier 2016.
Vande Berg on Reich: Evan is a cerebral player that works incredibly hard, both mentally and physically, to improve with every contact. What originally stuck out to us is her natural platform and feel for the ball in serve receive, which is an essential part of her position. She has extensive experience in the weight room as well as she has worked for many years with a colleague of mine (Mitch Sadowsky) and he had nothing but great things to say about her dedication and work ethic. She has a tremendous ceiling and we are very excited to help her reach her potential here.
Emma Worthington – S/RS – 5-11
(Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart) Omaha, Neb.
Prior to Cornell
• Four-year letter winner at the Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart.
• Three-time captain.
• Two-time Class B Player of the Year (2017, 2018).
• 2018 Nebraska All-Star Game selection.
• Three-time all-state selection, earning first-team in 2018, second-team in 2017 and third team in 2016.
• Named a two-time first-team Class B selection (2017, 2018) after a second-team selection in 2016.
• Three-time first-team all-conference (2016, 2017, 2018).
• Four-time state qualifier.
• A member of Nebraska Elite Volleyball, serving as captain for six seasons.
Vande Berg on Worthington: Emma is everything we need in the setter position – well trained, highly competitive and through the roof volleyball IQ. Every team she has played for has exceeded expectations and that is because of her. Her club coach at Nebraska Elite told us that Emma is in his top five most competitive players that he has ever coached. Assistant Coach
Caitlin Mahoney is another one of those five, so I know exactly what to expect. She runs the court like a veteran and will make a seamless transition to the college game. I can't wait to help Emma reach her potential in a Big Red uniform.
