ITHACA, N.Y. — ECAC Hockey announced Monday that Cornell sophomore goaltender
Austin McGrath has been named the men's Goaltender of the Week.
With 2018 first-team All-America East Region goaltender
Matthew Galajda sidelined over Cornell's last four games with an injury, McGrath has made the most of his first collegiate starts. He helped anchor the Big Red to a successful return to action last weekend, when it took three of a possible four points on a road trip to defending ECAC Hockey champion Princeton and sixth-ranked Quinnipiac.
McGrath's 1.92 goals against average and .942 save percentage for the week were lowest among ECAC Hockey goaltenders that played in two games.
On Friday against the Tigers, McGrath's 30 saves were the most by a Big Red goaltender this season — until he made 35 stops the next night against the Bobcats. Quinnipiac jumped out to a 2-0 lead inside 15 minutes before McGrath shut the door for good, stopping the hosts' final 26 shots on target while the Big Red clawed back into a deadlock on goals by sophomores
Cam Donaldson and
Morgan Barron.
Now 7-5-1 overall, 5-2-1 and in third place in the ECAC Hockey standings, Cornell climbed three spots in the USCHO.com national poll to 17th on Monday while starting to again garner votes in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll.
The Big Red returns home for its next four games, starting with its final non-league contests of the season Friday and Saturday against 13th-ranked Arizona State. Tickets are on sale now through the Cornell Athletic Ticketing Office or on its website at www.CornellBigRedTickets.com.
